December 12, 2005

It's a happy, happy day today! Casey returns from the Torino World Cup this evening!  Kea (our Springer Spaniel) and I are excited to have him home for a while over the holidays.

You were all probably wondering a week ago why I hadn't written a newsletter after the Milwaukee World Cup. Well, many athletes have superstitions and writing that Casey had pre-qualified for the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics after the Milwaukee competition may have jinxed him in his final world cup races before Olympic Trials.  Pre-qualifying for the Olympics meant he had to have a podium finish at least once in each race at a World Cup Competition. As you can see from the results below, on Sunday, November 27th Casey pre-qualified in both his 500m and 1000m races in front of nearly 100 family and friends who came out to cheer our hometown kid to victory. We were thrilled, but didn't necessarily want to say it out loud until after the Torino World Cup was complete.  Casey could have been knocked out of his spots if an American skater finished higher than he had in his races he medalled in.  I know it sounds confusing, but long story short, Casey is qualified for his 500m and 1000m races at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics in February!

He will be skating Olympic Trials after Christmas. His 500m and 1000m races will be practice and then on Friday, December 30th he will be skating the 1500m race to see if he can qualify for a third race as well!   The US Team will be skipping the Inzell, Germany World Cup this next weekend to come home to prepare for trials. Several teams from around the world are doing the same thing, so our guy shouldn't be dropping to far in the overall World Cup Standings. He is sitting 6th overall in his 500m race and 4th in his 1000m race.

Overall, Casey was thrilled to be able to skate well in Torino and on the Lingotto ice sheet.  He stated the inside of the rink is pretty much complete, it's dusty and it makes it hard to breath at times, but they've done a real nice job. The outside of the oval needs to be completed with paved sidewalks and parking lots, but it looks like things are on track to be ready for February. They had no issues with the timing system, which is always a concern with a new facility! We are excited about that! The team stayed at a hotel right downtown in the shopping district, Via Roma to be exact! I'm so incredibly jealous, ¦guess I'll have to check it out when I'm there in February.

I will keep you updated on Olympic Trial Results and which Americans will be joining Casey as apart of the 2006 Olympic Speedskating Team.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season & Merry Christmas!!  Ho Ho Ho!!
